Dyslexic brains are different to the "norm"....

... in fact they are a slightly different size and are wired to "think differently"

Dyslexia isn't a brain defect or disease, it's just a difference in the way it works.

Just like an Apple Mac being different to a Microsoft Windows Computer.

Positive traits of Dyslexia are....

  • Hard Working, Determination and Persistence

  • Creativity and Lateral Thinking

  • Seeing the Big Picture

  • Empathic towards other people

  • Good understanding of systems
    (Machines, computers, etc...)

Some Dyslexic Difficulties are...

  • Speed of processing
  • Working Memory
  • Concentration
  • Self Image
Dyslexic people have a wider and more diverse range of strengths and weaknesses than the norm.  A dyslexic person can be extremely good in one area and surprisingly weak in another.

Many difficulties for dyslexic people occur due to the differences in the way we think and the non dyslexic world.    It is very similar to using an Apple Mac in a world that is predominately Microsoft Windows.

A Dyslexic Myth

 A Dyslexic Moth

"Isn't dyslexia what kids have? It's where they read things sdrawkcab and grow out of it when they're older"

Well no -  That commonly held myth isn't the case, dyslexia stays with you for life. The only thing that changes for the dyslexic person is that they learn new ways of coping and gain more confidence in using those coping strategies to deal with their difficulties.

Some people become so good at covering up their dyslexic symptoms that most other people won't even realise that they have dyslexia but there will be times that the strategies don't work effectively and the dyslexic person might run into difficulties..

It is also important to realise that only a small percentage of dyslexics read things backwards, whereas a lot of dyslexia is related to general difficulties in reading, writing and differences in cognitive thinking.
